It was a crisp day in March 2023 when Emma and Austin, chose to tie the knot at the scenic Cornhill Castle. It's remote location was part of the Castle's charm, with its beautiful views of the rolling hills and rushing river. Though it was far from Emma's childhood home in California, it was symbolic of the country she nows call home: Scotland. It was in Scotland that their love story was born, of a walk in the local woods near Stirling as their first date - a first date with an insant love that brought them to their wedding day a few short years later.

Their theme was nothing short of magical - a Midsommer's Night's Dream blended perfectly with fantasy elements of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It was vision that truly came into being, with Cornhill Castle bedecked in vibrant florals, cosy candlit setting and a wedding dress to match that beautiful fantasy style.

Morning Prep &amp; Getting Ready Shots

The epic tunes from the bridal suite could be heard from the top landing, and as I opened the door to the Dunrobin Suite, my eyes were met with a whole lot of Californian energy. All the bridesmaids were up dancing, mimosas in one hand, matching dressing gowns and sunglasses. It was electric, infectiously happy. Emma was dancing as much as she could, sitting getting her hair done, while her mum Dorothea was nervously counting the minutes down until her daughter became a bride.

As ever, I started with details shots - including an extremely sentimental and old handwritten note from Emma's late grandmother, as well as her handkerchief as her something old. To this day, it remains one of my favourite shots of 2023, combining something old, something borrowed and something blue in the same composition.

&nbsp;

Austin and his groomsmen were getting ready down in one of the lodges to the back of Cornhill Castle. Far from the high energy of the bridesmaids, Austin and his friends were relaxed if maybe a little nervous for the day ahead. We took a wonder around the grounds to get some informal shots of Austin and his friends before I returned to the bridal suite. At the request of Emma &amp; Austin, a special moment of the day wasn't captured on camera, but it was a lovely moment worth mentioning. Emma and Austin wanted to have a private moment together, where they could receipt their own vows without seeing each other. Emma's wedding planner, Anna, helped arrange that moment, ensuring neither could see other before the big reveal in the pavillion later. Instead, they were placed on either side of a corner, eyes closed, and allowed to reach around to hold each other's hands. As much as I would have loved to have captured this moment for them, I loved the idea that this was one part of the day that was truly private, and is remembered solely by them.

The Epic Dress Reveal

With the ceremony fast approaching, it was time for the bridal suite to be cleared and for Emma to step into her dress. As Emma wanted to do a dress reveal with both her father and her bridesmaids, everyone but her mum and wedding planner left. It was a big moment as her mum helped her with her buttons, and jewellery. Outside, I'd arranged for her Dad, Lee, to wait for his daughter. From meeting Lee earlier that year during a venue visit, I knew this was going to be an emotionally charged scene - and he did not disappoint, bursting into tears the second he saw his beautiful daughter.

Allowing them a few moments together, I then squirreled Emma away so that I could arrange her bridesmaids on the steps, facing the mirror, for the next big dress reveal. That Californian energy rose to the occasion, with screams of joy and awe. Like father, like daughter - Emma's sister also promptly burst into tears.

The Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony itself was like a wildflower meadow in full bloom. As the bridal party arrived, Austin's waited for his bride nervously at the top of the aisle - and the wait was so, so worth it.

It was a beautiful and romantic ceremony, celebrating everything that make Emma &amp; Austin such a unique and wonderful couple. There was a candlelighting ceremony, with both parents invited to each light a candle before Emma &amp; Austin lit theirs - a symbol of their bright, burning love for each other. As a surprise to guests, their rings were going to be delivered in a very magical way! And who better to deliver their wedding rings than Bilbo the Owl, who swooped dramatically down the aisle. He even gave Austin a little "beak kiss" as congratulations.

The floral arrangement in Cornhill Castle's pavillion was truly amazing, and the perfect backdrop to their first kiss photos.

Drinks Reception, Group Photos and Couples Portraits

Immediately after the ceremony, everyone gathered at the fountain for whole guest group photo - I especially loved the pose that Emma's parents made!

During the drinks reception, Emma &amp; Austin took a little time out to themselves to enjoy those first few minutes of being married together. When your wedding day flies by, it's so important to spend some time together as just the two of you - and it was lovely for Emma &amp; Austin to spend these few minutes together, grabbing a first bite to eat now that their nerves had settled.
&nbsp;
Meanwhile their guests were mingling in the reception area enjoying Owl pets and catching up over old times. The sun was piercing through the low cloud at the far end of the valley by the time we got out for group photos and couples portraits. The beautiful scenery at Cornhill Castle made for the perfect backdrop to Emma &amp; Austin's first couple photos together as husband &amp; wife. We had also arranged to do a private first dance with Emma's wedding dress, as she was going to be changing into another one after the meal. With everyone still chatting away on the other side of the castle, we took a few moments for a quick shuffle and a twirl in Cornhill's entrance lobby, with its huge ornate windows.

The Evening Reception &amp; Speeches

And if owls weren't already enough of a surprise, what Emma had planned for her dining room wedding styling was just above and beyond what she could have dreamed of. Gorgeous velvet table cloths that glistened in the candlelight, beautiful floral arrangements towering over each table - which were aptly named after their favourite flowers. The flower arch from their ceremony now featured at their sweetheart top table. It's little wonder that jaws were dropping when the curtains were pulled back and the guests were invited to their seats.

There wasn't a dry eye in the room once the speeches were done - with the best man and maid of honour delivering the laughs, and mother of the groom and father of the bride bringing in the sentimentality &amp; emotion.

Once the meal was over, and twilight had set in, I headed outside with Emma &amp; Austin for some sparkler shots. We decided to do 2 sets of sparklers, one privately with just Emma &amp; Austin at twilight, and then a second set with their wedding party once darkness had set in. Both sets of sparkler images have a very different and unique feel to them. After the sparklers, their wedding party headed in while Emma &amp; Austin stayed behind for some romantic backlit photos. It just happened to rain for a split second as they held the umbrella over their heads - with the rain illumiated by my flash setup. It made for such an atmospheric and completely unplanned shot.

Cake Cutting, First Dance &amp; Ceilidh

We headed back inside to cut their gorgeous 3 tier cake before Emma &amp; Austin's first dance. It was such a romantic moment, and Emma's new dress sparkled in the soft evening lighting. It was important to Emma to also include a father-daughter dance. Her dad once again burst into tears and the emotion on his face in these photos is truly some of my favourite candid images from their wedding.

And with that, the formalities and traditions of the day were passed and the ceilidh &amp; party began. Everyone was having an epic time on the dancefloor, with dresses and kilts flying around, sunglasses once again out and everyone throwing out their best moves.

Real Wedding - Cornhill Castle

There is something undeniably romantic about a Scottish autumn wedding. The season, with its rich palette of reds, oranges and golds, already paints a beautiful backdrop for any celebration of love. As the leaves turn and the air begins to cool, Scotland's breathtaking landscapes become more enchanting, providing a unique setting for an unforgettable wedding day. Imagine the majestic Scottish Highlands, nestled under a canopy of autumn leaves, their fiery hues reflecting off the mirrored surfaces of the lochs. Or the historic castles, their stone walls echoing with centuries of folklore, standing tall against the vibrant autumn foliage. This is the backdrop for a Scottish autumn wedding, a setting so rich in beauty and tradition that it feels like a fairy tale.

There's a reason it's my favourite season for weddings, with the golden light that comes from the equinox and the darker nights setting in, it combines the best of the summer months where you can expect outdoor drinks receptions in walled gardens &amp; courtyards, and the warm &amp; cosy atmosphere of firepits, sparklers &amp; candlelit dinners. Scotland is truly at its finest in the autumn months, and it's becoming more popular for engaged couples are choosing to celebrate at this time of year.
 The weather during autumn in Scotland may be a bit fickle, but this simply adds to the charm. There's a certain beauty in the uncertainty, a thrill in the possibility of a sudden rainshower, followed by the emergence of a rainbow. Brides often opt for luxurious wraps or elegant tartan shawls to keep the chill at bay, adding a touch of Scottish heritage to their wedding attire. The wedding venues in Scotland are as varied as the mesmerizing landscapes. Couples can choose from a plethora of stunning locations; from grand castles and elegant manor houses to rustic barns and charming country inns. Many of these venues offer breathtaking views of the autumn scenery, creating a perfect setting for wedding photographs that will be treasured for a lifetime.

When you're planning your autumn wedding in Scotland, there are a few things you'll want to be aware of when choosing your wedding date.

1. Sunsets
&nbsp;
If you're choosing a September wedding, it's useful to know the sunset times as they vary substantially from the 1st to the 30th owing to the Equinox and the change in the position the sun sets at as it approaches and moves away from this point. At the beginning of September we lose roughly 2 mins of daylight a day, but as we approach the Equinox it's 3. That's a pattern that applies to the Vernal Equinoxes and both Solstices too (if you thought Calculus was a waste of your time in Maths Class, think again!)

All of this means between the 1st and 30th September we lose about 1hr 16 minutes of daylight, compared with around 40 minutes from the 1st to the 31st July. It's similar between 1st and 31st October, at around 1hr 15 minutes. That might not be a deal breaker, but if you have your heart set on golden hour sunset couples portraits you may find it lands right in the middle of your wedding meal. As your photographer, I'm more than happy to dash out between the main &amp; dessert to get some of these gorgeous photos for you - we only need a few minutes to capture magic. Though it does have it's drawbacks - and can mean interrupting a conversation you're having at your top table, or even just taking you away from the atmosphere of your dining setup. I'll always check with your venue's staff how far through your meal you are, and I'll never interrupt you mid-meal unless you've specifically requested I do so for photos.

If you're booking me as your wedding photography, the sunset times for your wedding date is one of the first things that I research as to me this is a critical part of my planning process and can influence whether or not we do things like sparklers or backlit portraits in the time you've hired me for.

Colour Changes

Every year nature puts on quite a show with its vibrant colour transformation as the leaves change from deepest forest greens to crimson, burnt orange &amp; mustard yellows. No doubt if you're booking an autumn wedding, then that's the vibe you are looking for in your wedding photography. However, when autumn arrives can vary from year to year. If we've had a particularly dry summer or even droughts, we can have an early Autumn - with the leaves changing as soon as late August. On the contrary, if we get a super wet summer with lots of torrential rain, it can delay Autumn often well into October. It can be really heartbreaking if your date falls too early or too late for the glorious colours, and while there are no guarantees in nature, if your heart is set on those autumn colours you may want to opt for a date around early to mid October.

My editing style is based on a warm colour profile, which means we can still capture the atmosphere of an autumn wedding while keeping your edited images realistic &amp; true to life. Wedding photographers who have a colder edit, centred around blue &amp; green tones, may not deliver the kind of cosy-vibes you are hoping for - so that's worth bearing in mind when you are <a href="https://www.sgmarkphotography.com/posts/choosing-your-wedding-photographer">choosing your photographer</a>.

Weather &amp; Temperature Changes

Whilst it doesn't occur every year, September frequently enjoys a period of warmth and is often one of the driest months (especially in Edinburgh) of the year. So if you're after an outdoor wedding or even just taking advantage of the gorgeous grounds in your wedding venue for couples photos, then you'll most likely be lucky with the weather. However, as we head into October and November you can expect the weather to get a little stormy and it's possible to have Yellow or Amber weather warnings on or before your wedding day. These may impact your guests getting to the wedding venue - such as trains being cancelled or delayed, or even road closures due to falling trees. While storms are wonderful additions to that cosy, Autumnal vibe, they can greatly affect your wedding day - from not having an outdoor ceremony to whether or not it's safe to step out for couples photos. If it's a bit of rain or a tad windy, then I'm all for heading out and getting a little wet - but if you're not too adventurous or would prefer your hairstyle wasn't completely blown out by the wind, you may prefer to keep things indoors or to stick with a month that has calmer weather.

Despite everything, Autumn will remain my favourite time of year for weddings &amp; photography in general. Whether it's the gorgeous display of colours, the beautiful soft day lighting or the amazing sunsets we get and those darker evenings, it all adds up to a cosy, warming vibe that you really can't get at any other time of year.

Autumn Weddings in Scotland

Finding the right photographer to capture your day is just as important as finding the right wedding venue to celebrate your love. If your dream wedding is a cosy, rustic barn with fairy lights, you won't be booking the swish upmarket &amp; modern hotel in town, will you?

Booking the right photographer is about more than just finding the someone within your price range who has availability.

When you are spending one of the most important days of your life with someone, you want to make sure that you are going to be happy and comfortable around them.
Finding a photographer who is on your level is so incredibly important - not just for making you feel relaxed and at ease, but for bringing out your personality. When you are uncomfortable around someone, you may feel closed off, unable to fully embrace the emotion of the moment or cannot immerse yourself completely in your day.

So while you may love a photographer for their style, price or packages, meet with them over a coffee, call or a video chat and really ask yourself "Can I be myself with this person?"

A photographer is just like any other artist. They've honed their skill over the years, and have processes and practices in place that work best for them. They'll also have a style that they prefer - this may be reportage, documentary style, photojournalistic, fine art, candid, traditional or relaxed &amp; natural. That's a lot of word salad right there if you aren't clued up on the different styles available.

There's no right or wrong way to capture a wedding - well, unless all the photos are blurred and key shots are missed, but that's another story. When you are hiring a photographer for your wedding, it's really important to understand their style and accept that.
&nbsp;
A photographer's style is really part of their identity, and makes their work unique and personal.
&nbsp;
So if you are looking for a long list of group shots and want to provide a full itinerary for the photographer to strictly follow, then maybe a natural, candid photographer isn't quite for you. Equally, someone who is a natural light photographer isn't likely to want to produce the in-vogue direct flash style images you may have seen on Instagram recently. It's not that these photographers will refuse these requests on principal - instead, think about what their specialism is and you can also ask them directly about what they think on the trend or style you are looking for. A wedding photographer may also make some stylistic choices in-camera that influence the look &amp; feel of the images - such as depth of field. Professional photographers use premium lenses that add a more luxurious finish to photos, while other cheaper lenses may lead to your images looking a little flat.

Some things to consider: what's their approach to photographing candid images? Will your couples portrait time take up a huge portion of your drinks reception? How will they photograph the key moments of the day - your ceremony, the speeches and the dancing? Do they have a flexible approach throughout the day? Do they work to a specific shot list that you provide, or do they take a more creative &amp; personal approach to capturing your day? Do they offer a service that covers a specific number of hours or is their coverage based on events, e.g. getting ready to the first 3 dances only?

While all photographers are essentially doing the same thing - taking photos of your wedding, I like to use the following analogy to help my couples explain the differences between wedding photography specialisms:

Would you hire a guitarist for your wedding and then make them play piano? It's all music after all, so what's the difference? The guitarist might get away with bashing out a few good notes, but wouldn't you just rather hire the pianist?

This one's closely tied in with photography style, but while the former section is more about how a photographer shoots their weddings, this one is more about the final end stage product.

As a photographer, an editing style does evolve over time - it's a creative endeavour after all, and there's always something new to play with. Our tastes do also change over time, and those chocolate coloured contrasty elopements may one day be the thing of Instagram-Past.

Your photographers portfolio should be updated with their latest images - and this should be a reflection of the style they currently edit in. While some photographers may offer each couple a selection of editing styles to choose from, be sure to check that this is a service they provide before your book.

Many photographers have a signature style that they tweak over the years so if you are looking for those aforementioned glorious dark chocolatey styles you've seen in Glencoe but found a photographer whose portfolio is beautiful but is full of light and airy images then maybe you'll need to continue your search. Some photographers may relish in taking on a new editing challenge, so it may also be worth asking them in your enquiry or dropping them a DM on their socials. Either way, don't go ahead and book your photographer and assume that they'll edit in whatever style you suggest.

It's also worth learning what style suits you and your day. As a photographer, I follow others in the industry both locally and around the world. There are a lot of talented people out there and I can love their work and editing style - but I won't necessarily want that for my own wedding day.

Ask yourself what will suit your day and your venue. If you've chosen a really colourful wedding venue such as the Royal Botanic Gardens or Newhall Estate, then would you want an editing style that loses a lot of that colour &amp; warmth?

It's also worth understanding what the editing process involves - will the photographer significantly alter your appearance, remove distracting objects as standard, or will there be an additional charge for this service?

Placing trust in your photographer isn't about whether or not they'll turn up on the correct day or not take blurry photos of all the key moments. It's about an implicit understanding between both the couple and the photographer about how the day will be captured.

When you are hiring an experienced photographer, understand that this won't be their first rodeo. As much as they'll want to understand the timeline of your day and any unique events or activities you'll be planning, trust that they'll know how to capture that in the best way possible even if it's something that is a little different from the traditional wedding day.
An experienced photographer will always be one step ahead of you on the day, and will think and plan how and where they are going to be throughout each stage of the day.
So when you have that first chat with your potential photographer, always ask them what their process is for the day. If their answer doesn't fit within your vision of how you'd like your day to run, then maybe they aren't the right photographer for you.

If you are unsure of what your own vision might be - speak to a few photographers to learn which style &amp; approach you'd prefer. You may want a photographer that's completely hands-off and just roams around in the background offering no guidance or direction, or you may indeed prefer someone who throws themselves into your party to grab the moments that matter to you, or perhaps someone like myself who is in between and knows when to take a step back and let the magic happen.

Whatever approach you prefer, make sure any photographer you hire matches that vision.

Placing trust in your photographer is one of the most important things you can do - from the way they shoot your wedding through to the final edit and delivery stage. By chatting with them during the pre-booking process you'll have a chance to evaluate whether they understand completely your vision for the day. If you think there's a disconnect, then you may want to continue your search and save yourself a lot of stress on both sides.

<h3>Can You Be Yourselves?</h3>

You're not spending the rest of your life with your photographer (you've found that special person already), but you should ask yourself can I spend a day with them?
&nbsp;
Unlike any other supplier you hire, photographers are arguably going to be spending the most time with you - with videographers coming in a close second. I'm with my couples from around 11am through to 9pm at night usually - that's a lot of time to spend with someone you barely know. I'll be there when you step into your dress, when your mum and dad burst into tears of joy at seeing you in your outfit for the very first time. When you are kissing your new spouse and being intimate during couples portraits, you'll want to have someone who doesn't intimidate your or make you feel like you can't be yourselves.
&nbsp;
Some photographers will have a more extrovert presence in the room, some more introvert - and some, like me, are in between. You'll want to hire a photographer who is going to match your energy. My style is to be there amongst the action, chipping in with ideas when needed, laughing at the jokes - and throwing some in myself - as well as offering guidance and support to anyone who needs it. My approach puts everyone at ease and enables them to relax around me as they would a friend - and means they become less and less aware of me as the day progresses.

Each photographer is different, and you may prefer a more hands-off approach, where your photographer is neither seen nor heard. If you are unsure of how a photographer might be on the day - have a chat with them. Even just a 10 minute chat over Zoom or the phone can give you enough insight into their personality and how they deal with a wedding day.

<h3>Are They Familiar With Your Wedding Venue?</h3>

Is it always advantageous for your photographer to have worked at your venue before? Yes and no. Some photographers will have their venue shot list and location spots all planned out and many will get reused again and again for each wedding. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but don't underestimate how exciting a new venue is for a photographer. It's a chance to flex their creative skills, try new things and explore compositions from a fresh perspective.

As a wedding photographer, I always strive to create unique images for my couples, even at the wedding venues I'm working 5-6 times a year but I relish the idea of a new venue. So while you may be tempted to go for a photographer who knows the venue very well, don't be put off by one who isn't familiar with it as this may lead to an explosion of creative magic that truly make your images unique.

And remember, all new venues I cover get a free venue visit where I meet up with your events coordinator to run through how they manage your day, scout for shot locations and assess lighting so I'm totally prepared for the challenge ahead.

Your Wedding Photography Budget

By no means would I ever encourage you to spend more money than you can afford on your dream photographer. A wedding day should always be about celebration, rather than putting yourself into debt over a party. However, if you've got a set budget and the wedding photographer you really want is over that limit, instead of feeling that this person is out of reach consider reviewing the budget in another way. Unlike catering or flowers, your wedding photography gallery is going to be around for decades to come. Rather than thinking about your wedding photography being a cost, it's useful to think about it as an investment. If the difference between your perfect wedding photographer - someone whose style you like and who you'll feel comfortable around - is &pound;300 higher than your budget, then consider that an investment in the quality of your images. If you are going to feel more comfortable around a certain photographer, then you'll have a deeper connection to those images than if you are feeling nervous or anxious in front of the camera. The quality and value of a wedding photographer is subjective, so one couple may value the services higher than another - but it should be about how you feel about them.

Another way to look at it is over the course of your married life. If you really wanted a photographer who was &pound;300 more expensive, then that's just an additional &pound;30 per year of expense by the time you celebrate your 10th wedding anniversary. Having wedding images to cherish for decades to come is why you are investing in a professional wedding photographer to begin with - so if you feel you can spare &pound;30 a year over the next 10 years to invest in a gallery that you can look back with love and affection, then maybe expanding your photography budget is something to consider.

That initial feeling of being super aware that there's a new shiny addition to your finger is exciting, and I'm sure you can't wait to start planning your dream day - even if it's a few years away. Whether it's an hour since you said Yes, or it's been several months, planning your wedding is a daunting task once you start to delve into it. These days there's an endless choice of how to celebrate your union - from extravagant affairs costing millions in Paris, to simple elopements in Glencoe and an infinite combination in between. So where do you start? Grab a cup of tea, and settle in for some of my top tips for planning your epic wedding.

Wedding Style &amp; Vibe

Your wedding style &amp; vibe is going to set the tone for your wedding planning, budget and of course the day itself. The first thing I would recommend doing is discussing with your partner the vision for the big day. That includes the size of your wedding - how many guests you might want to invite, whether you want it to be informal DIY or have someone take care of the event for you, as well as any themes or elements of your personality you might like to include. For instance, one partner may want a Lord of the Rings themed party like Bilbo's Birthday (definitely not talking about myself here), and the other may want to celebrate in a stately home full of tradition. Coming together to bring about both elements that matter to you both is what your wedding day should be all about, so there may need to be compromise on both sides in order for your unique personalities and styles to be incorporated into your day.

Once you've got an idea of the wedding size and style, my next recommendation is to consider the kind of venues that would suit your personalities and the party that you'd like. If you are looking for a more relaxed vibe, then something like a rustic barn or modern venue with outdoor options may suit you much better than an old Castle steeped in history or a luxury hotel that may not allow much flexibility. Match the venue with your vibe, not the other way around - no matter how beautiful the venue might be.

When to Marry

When you've narrowed down the type of venue you'd like, then the next thing you'd want to consider the time of year you'd like to be married. If you're choosing Scotland as the place you'll exchange vows, then you might feel a little apprehensive due to our reputation for bad weather. However much rainfall we get a year, Scotland can and does have beautifully gorgeous days no matter the time of year. Setting your expectations is something to consider - so don't assume Summer is great and Autumn is rainy, because more often than not it's the other way around. From experience and data taken from the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh on rainfall, July is the worst of the summer months for rainfall, while September is surprisingly dry by comparison. That's not to say that planning a July wedding in Edinburgh will end in torrential rain, but it's something consider if you are in love with the idea of an outdoor wedding. Rain also doesn't stop your wedding photography - in fact, some of my favourite images ever have been taken in between huge downpours as it creates a brilliant atmosphere when the sun pierces through the clouds. Summer months do tend to add to your wedding budget though, so if you are looking to keep costs down it might be an idea to look at an off season date from October to early May.

September is an increasingly popular month, which is also something to watch out for as your dream venue or suppliers may already be booked out. What was traditionally counted as a wedding date towards the end of the season is very often peak business for venues and many suppliers. It's certainly my favourite month for weddings - that's because as the sun moves towards the Autumnal equinox, there's beautifully soft lighting that makes for great photos. Of course if the leaves turn early, there's amazing colour to be had if you're opting for a wedding venue that has lots of outdoor space and gardens.

Wedding Budgets

One of the most contentious topics within wedding planning, your budget is going to dominate the conversation between you &amp; your partner for months to come. The single most important piece of advice I can give you is that you are going to go over budget. If you're over on social media you'll no doubt have heard of "girl math" - well this is "wedding math" (or maths, because we're British and I used to teach maths). Managing a budget is tricky for multi-national corporations, so don't beat yourself up if you end up spending a little more than you expected on your wedding day. However, if you want to be prepared, I would always over estimate how much you want to spend. Adding in a 10-15% buffer for everything means that whilst that initial budget may seem a little extreme, it means that if you DO make savings, then you can re-invest that credit into another part of your wedding budget that may demand more resources than planned. It also means that when things do go a little out of hand financially, then you've already mitigated against that initial shock and instead your budget's only increased 10% rather than 25% of your original budget.

The best way to set a budget is deciding what's most important to you. That might be the grandeur of a venue, or it might be the catering or the dress. If you value good food &amp; drink options, then you'll want to set aside a larger portion of your budget for catering - likewise if you think that wedding photography is super important to you. There's no right or wrong way to prioritise your wedding budget - everyone will have their own values and what's important to them, and whilst my top would be photography and I'd love for every couple to prioritise that it's just simply not the case for everyone. It's important that this day reflects you and your values - so listen to your heart not Instagram trends.

One of the most common complaints of couples looking to book their special day is that prices increase when they mention the word "wedding" to a supplier. It's super important to know that wedding suppliers don't do that because they are evil capitalist machines, but because there's a certain amount of responsibility &amp; cost involved in a wedding that might not present for any other type of event. For instance, a make up artist will charge more for wedding make up than simply party make up - that's because your make up needs to last all day (often 12hrs+) so they may use more expensive products for that, they also have to be up early and travel to your venue at silly times in the morning, and they very often cannot take on any more clients that day because of it. There's also the pressure behind a wedding day to consider - for instance, if I miss a kiss during a couple's photoshoot it's not as much of a deal than if I missed the first kiss during a wedding ceremony. When you are dealing with unrepeatable moments, you need to ensure you are hiring professionals who know what they are doing and don't need a second chance to get it right.

Many suppliers and venues will expect a deposit or retainer fee in order to secure your booking with them. The balance is usually due before the wedding day - sometimes 6 weeks, 30 days or even a week before depending on the policies of the supplier. You may want the option of paying a supplier earlier, so you can manage your budget a bit more throughout the year - discuss with them if that's something they are happy to enable. As a wedding photographer, balances are due 6 weeks before the big day but if you'd like to pay a portion towards it early that's always an option too and I'm more than happy to arrange that.

A pro tip is always ensure that you know exactly what is included in any chosen package before you sign a contract / pay a deposit - whether it's catering, a photographer, the venue or a florist. You'll want to avoid any hidden surprises close to the wedding day - or even after - when you realise something you had assumed was included in the price actually wasn't. For instance, some photographers may deliver 300 images but then charge for each additional image thereafter, meaning you may be paying extra to access all the amazing moments in your gallery. In case you're wondering - when you book with me, there's no upper limit with the images I deliver and you'll never be charged for additional images.

Once you've got an idea of the style of wedding you'd like, the type of venue that would best suit and the budget you could allocate towards it, it's best to start your venue hunt as soon as possible. Dates can book up really fast, and sometimes your wedding date is allocated purely based on what's available at your dream wedding venue rather than the time of year that you'd like to marry in. I would recommend doing 4-5 venue viewings if possible, including a wildcard option if you can. In my time as a photographer, I've certainly known more than a handful of couples who had their heart set on one wedding style only to veer wildly to another because they viewed a venue that didn't fit in their original vision and fell in love. A wildcard option will either serve to reaffirm that you may the right choice for your wedding style, or make you reconsider the whole thing - either way it's a great idea.

During your venue visit or open house, it's always best to imagine these key things:

On Site Accommodation: it may not be a deal breaker for you, but it certainly makes things a lot smoother on the day if you're not travelling on the Edinburgh City Bypass. If one or both of you can stay at the venue the night before, then it's always a plus. If the venue doesn't have any on-site accommodation though, look at what the options are nearby. Do you or your guests need to travel far? Do you need to put on transport for everyone, or just the wedding party &amp; immediate family?

Wedding Venue Styling: is the venue a blank canvas where you can inject your own style, or is it somewhere with limited scope to make it your own? Ask the events coordinator what you can do to make your venue unique to your day - can you bring in independent wedding stylists? Can you have a floral arch?

Outdoor Ceremony Options: with the rise of outdoor wedding ceremonies ever popular, especially now that couples in England have that choice to marry outdoors, it's always best to check what the policies are for hosting your ceremony outside. Ask the events coordinator what the venues does for outdoor ceremonies, is there a dedicated spot for it in the grounds, what are the options if it rains, can you put up a marquee?

Wedding Venues &amp; Outside Suppliers: certain wedding venues will insist on couples selecting their suppliers from a pre-approved list of recommended companies. This may be florists, wedding stylists or caterers. More and more couples are looking for flexibility in their wedding days, especially when it comes to catering - so check if the wedding venue has any flexibility on the style of food &amp; drink they will offer, and if they do allow outside caterers in their kitchens. It's not a popular question, but with more and more couples opting for street food style catering over the traditional fine dining 3 course meal you may find that venues are more willing to adapt than they previously were.

Imagine Your Wedding: this sounds like an obvious question, but if you're first visiting a venue in January when the trees are bare, it's freezing and the grounds aren't looking their best, then you'll need to use your imagination as to what your wedding day will look like in say July. There's an assumption that everything will be greener, more colourful - but is that the case? Venues with big, wide driveways and courtyards with little to no greenery nearby may still feel a little on the cold side - and city centre weddings also may have that concrete feel that just isn't what you'll be wanting for your summer wedding vibes. Take a moment to look at the wedding venue on Instagram - go to the tagged section too, as that shows you what other couples / guests and photographers have posted about the venue rather than the select few curated images the wedding venue has chosen to share on their 'gram.

Booking Your Wedding Suppliers

Once you've booked your venue, everything else can fall into place. No wedding supplier worth their salt should in all good conscience book a couple who have not locked in their venue &amp; wedding date. So when you've booked your venue, it's best to begin the search for the next most important suppliers - namely Celebrant (someone to marry you) and your photographer and / or videographer. This is because these suppliers are typically the most sought after - your favourite photographer may already have their date booked if you enquire too late. Even if you don't have an initial preference on a celebrant, finding someone to marry you who understands what you want from your ceremony is super important so it's best to lock them in as soon as you can.

It's important to note that all wedding suppliers offer something unique. By definition, we are a people orientated industry and that's why what we offer is so personal. When you are looking for suppliers, you'll want to find people who offer services that line up with your vision. Wedding suppliers will all have their unique style, creative approach and expertise. For instance, if you're looking for a naked wedding cake, take a look at bakers who offer this service rather than assume all bakers will make this on demand. It's the same with florists, wedding stylists, hair &amp; make up artists - learn what it is that they offer and see if that aligns with what you'd like. It's super important to schedule a hair &amp; make up trial before the big day too as if you really dislike the style on offer then you can always change supplier at the last minute. There's no shame in saying you dislike a service that's offered - a make up artist would far rather you pick someone that matches your style that know that you didn't feel confident about your look on your wedding day.

Whie castles have been fitted with huge stained glass windows that allow natural light to flood the room, many are in keeping with their original design and as such rely on artificial lighting to brighten the room. From a photography perspective, this mean that your wedding photographer may have to use flash if you want your images to look their best and be lit correctly.

Let me tell you a story set on a cold, crisp October day, with golden Autumnal sunlight, bright blue skies and the vibrant cobbled streets of Edinburgh's Old Town. The Signet Library is one of the most luxurious wedding venues in Edinburgh. Nestled in the heart of the Royal Mile, it's a hidden gem if you aren't familiar with it. A beautiful, yet unassuming entranceway hides a stunning staircase and a library like no other. With natural light falling beautifully through the tall windows that flank either side, the lower library is truly spectacular, but it's the upper library that will truly take your breath away.

This story begins at Fraser Suites, with Rosie and her bridesmaids getting ready in the morning with a delicious graze board of waffles, strawberries and pastries, champagne and stunning views of Edinburgh. Rosie's dress was sparkling in the sunshine. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as hair &amp; make up were well underway.

A hop step &amp; a jump over to The Signet Library, and John and his groomsmen were waiting for their turn for photos. We took advantage of the lower library for photos, with its stunning backdrop of bookcases and old, dusty books from eons past. After a few relaxed &amp; fun shots with the boys, I was back over to Fraser Suites for the final getting ready shots with Rosie. As her mum zipped up the back of her dress and her veil now in place, she was absolutely glowing with excitement. Her golden curly locks perfectly complemented the soft sparkles of her dress and headpiece. When her dad entered for the big reveal, he rushed over for a big hug.

Rosie entered with her father on her arm, and when John's eyes met his future wife, he melted with happiness. Rosie &amp; John married in a beautiful ceremony, with natural light streaming down through the stained glass windows and pouring golden light into the cathedral. As they exited as husband &amp; wife they were beaming with pure joy.

Outside a crowd had gathered, awaiting the bride's arrival. We took a entire guest group shot on the steps outside the Cathedral before the kicking off the drinks reception in The Signet Library. where the grandeur of the venue was complemented by the warmth of the celebration.

As I reverted back to candids and wove through the room to snap photos of the guests mingling, I spotted the illustrator that Rosie &amp; John had hired to draw pictures of their guests. It was such a fabulous idea for entertainment, and I was super impressed at how quickly she was able to draw each set.

It wouldn't be an Edinburgh city centre wedding without a trip to Victoria Street for couples portraits. As we headed out into the cold, crisp October afternoon, golden light streamed from the heavens. We took a walk down the busy cobbled street, but also found a few moments of privacy at the edge of Riddles Court and once again in the arches of Parliament Square. Their newlywed couples portraits took in all the architectural wonders of Edinburgh's Old Town, perfect for a romantic backdrop in which to celebrate their love.

Upstairs, their wedding breakfast awaited them with round tables adorned with colourful florals &amp; candles amidst the truly stunning interiors of the upper library. Piped to their seats, the happy couple were met with huge applause as they were announced in. The speeches began immediately, beginning with father of the bride then to John for a heartfelt &amp; hilarious speech, and finally to best man Liam who more than lived up to expectations with embarrassing stories of John. They ended on an emotional note, with Rosie reciting a poem that brought both laughter &amp; tears.

The evening reception began with a magician entertaining the guests with his tricks and sleight of hand. The videographer and I were treated to some of his work over the break - I'm still not sure how he got Barry's wedding ring in that sealed envelope!

As night fell, I took Rosie &amp; John out for some special backlit shots along the Royal Mile. I always love setting these up - and there were gasps of awe from passing tourists as they saw Rosie and her dazzling dress. Back inside, we then used the grand staircase and some creative lighting for some of my favourite shots from throughout the whole wedding day.

After the cake cutting in the lower library, people made their way upstairs to be entertained by the band Bleeker for an evening of ceilidh dances and fun covers. Rosie &amp; John excelled on the dancefloor - and I even spotted a few of my photography posing tricks from their engagement session incorporated into their dance moves. Their guests raced to join them on the dancefloor, throwing their arms in the air to the beat and swinging each other around for the first of the ceilidh dances.

It was a day of love, laughter and happiness that Rosie &amp; John will never forget: two beautiful souls in a stunning city celebrating their love for one another.

Edinburgh is one of the trendiest places to get married in, even if you don't call this beautiful historical city home. From the grandeur of Edinburgh Castle, the charm of its cobbled streets, and the awe-inspiring landscapes that surround it make for a perfect backdrop for wedding celebrations. That's without mentioning many of the gorgeous wedding venues just outside the city, such as Arniston House or Dundas Castle. So whether you are opting for an Edinbugh city centre elopement, or grand celebrations in one of the many luxury wedding venues nearby, you'll want to have a wedding photographer by your side to capture those epic moments. But while the experience of getting married in a UNESCO world heritage site is priceless, your wedding photography won't be.

So how much should you be paying for a wedding photographer?

The price of wedding photography in Edinburgh can vary greatly, largely depending on the photographer's experience, the duration of the event, the location, and the specific services required. On average, you can expect to spend anywhere from &pound;800 to &pound;2500 on a professional wedding photographer in Edinburgh for a full day option.

You might be thinking, "Yikes" at the prospect of spending thousands on one person for a few hours, but there's a lot more to wedding photography than just turning up on the day. After all, if you hire someone to win a race for you, do you get Usain Bolt, or hope that Tony down the road, who has only completed a handful of 5k runs, will be up to the task?

For many of my readers, this will be your first experience of a wedding and might have no idea what to expect from your suppliers. So what are you really paying for when you hire a professional wedding photographer? Here are 5 things to consider when you are looking at hiring a wedding photographer for your day.

<h3 style="text-align: center;">1. Skill &amp; Experience</h3>

This is the most important thing you are paying for when booking a photographer. Your day is full of unrepeatable moments, so consider how willing you are to risk a photographer who hasn't had much experience at weddings? Do you want to risk blurred shots, or even worse - important moments being missed? Do you want your photographer to be still figuring out how to use their camera? Do you want to spend hours waiting around for group shots because your photographer isn't organised and doesn't have a shot list to had? What happens if problems arise - do you want to be calming your photographer down when they get flustered, or do you want to feel that you can completely trust in them?
&nbsp;
Hiring a skilled &amp; experienced photographer is night and day with someone who is newly starting out. That's why you should expect to pay a bit more for someone who is going to ensure your day runs smoothly, who knows how to problem solve in a crisis &amp; keep a cool head.
&nbsp;
A photographer's skill is more than just knowing what settings to use on their camera - it's knowing &amp; understanding composition, lighting and being able to creatively use their surroundings to capture beautiful moments in time in a seamingly effortless way. Someone who knows how to use the right focal length, composition and lighting will transform dull, 2D images into gorgeous memories of a wonderful day.

<h3 style="text-align: center;">2. Camera Gear, Equipment &amp; Other Costs</h3>

Having great gear doesn't necessarily make a great photographer, as without that aforementioned skill in composition, lighting &amp; artistry, a dull photo taken by a fancy camera is still a dull photo. However, by the nature of our work, photographers do need to have good gear that's up to the task, can withstand a demanding day of overuse. We need to have professional cameras that can take multiple shots super quickly, and high end lenses that capture your day wonderfully - with that gorgeous bokeh effect, and crisp sharp edges. An experienced photographer won't just take one camera along to a wedding but at least two. You don't want us faffing around changing lenses during your shoot, when we can simply have a camera with different lenses attached to us. We also don't just take one battery each and hope it lasts - I'm carrying back ups on me, at least 2-3 batteries plus 5+ SD cards and duplicates in-camera too. There's also lighting to consider too - with flash being an essential part of photography.

You'll also want us to be fully insured for your wedding - something that cheaper photographers may opt not to have. I also include travel &amp; accommodation with every package, meaning you don't have to worry about paying for my petrol money or a Premier Inn for a night or two on top of what you are paying me for your wedding photography.

<h3 style="text-align: center;">3. Professional Editing</h3>

Professional wedding photographers will also have software licenses that they use so that they can edit your images before delivery. Every image taken during your wedding will need to be edited to ensure consistency arosss the gallery, and that every photo has a certain signature feel about it.

No professional photographer would ever deliver images without editing them. Professionals shoot RAW, which contains massive amounts of information that we use to edit our images so that they have great lighting, even shadows and great, consistency colour across the gallery. When you're looking at wedding photographers near you, have a look at their editing style. Does it look consistency? Does it feel like they have a signature style? Does it have a depth to it, or does it make you feel a certain emotion when you look through their portfolio? Photographers who have curated a certain look or feel over the years will likely charge more for their services than someone who provides very little editing and delivers a straight-out-of-camera feel to their images.

Wedding photography isn't just about turning up on the day and hoping for the best. A great wedding photographer will understand how to shoot a wedding, but be able to tailor it to the parts of the day that are important to you. They'll want to meet with you before the wedding to plan your day, to understand what group shots you want or to reasssure you if you are feeling nervous about any particular aspect of the day. An experienced photographer will have lots of wisdom to offer that you may have overlooked - such as where to stand for your ceremony, and how to perform a great exit as a married couple. To me, this aspect of being a photographer is included in everything that I offer to my couples. Some cheaper photographers may prefer to provide a conveyor belt type approach - sticking to a set of shots they feel comfortable with and not varying them for their couple. I prefer a more personalised approach, opting to to understand how my couples interact and knowing what compositions and approaches will work for them.

Before the wedding day, I want to offer you as much advice and reassurance as I can. When you are relaxed and confident on your wedding day, then that translates directly into the camera and means we can have a fantastic time taking great couples portraits and you can really open up to me.

The shortest part of a wedding photographer's job is the wedding day itself. There's so much organisational build up and post-wedding editing to do, that the time we spent actually capturing these wonderful memories for couples is actually very short.

That's why it has to count for a lot.
&nbsp;
When you are hiring a photographer you aren't just paying for images. Your photographer is going to be a big part of your day - they'll be the closest person to you next to your partner throughout the day. That's why you need to be completely comfortable around them - and you need to be able to trust them implicitly.
&nbsp;
Most of my weddings take start around 11am and finish around 9pm - with around an hour's travel either side. I'm up early, barely drink water, don't sit down, don't eat until the break and I'm always thinking about what's coming up next. We don't get to sit and chat with the guests during the reception, we're scouting for great candids, emotional moments &amp; reactions. There's no sipping champagne and getting on the dancefloor.

While we aren't there to party, that doesn't mean that we are grumpy &amp; serious. I love a bit of banter, and I'm always laughing and joking - and rushing around to help make your day run super smoothly as much as I can. They might not be inherently tied into pricing, but your photographer's attitude on the day is a big part of what goes into their pricing and how in demand they are. We need to have a certain command of the room when required, and step into the shadows when we don't need to be seen.

Every couple will have a different wedding budget. It's best to steer clear from terms like affordable though - as that can mean something very different depending on the couple. What's really important to realise is what it is that you are paying for. Wedding photography simply isn't an on-the-day service. Your wedding gallery will be your window to the past, that you can dive into to relive your beautiful day. Choosing the wrong photographer for you could leave you with regret for a long time, and that's why it's so important to understand that personality, portfolio &amp; past experience is really the foundations on which you should base your wedding photography budget. When you hire the right photographer for your wedding day, you'll feel completely relaxed around them, find the experience fun &amp; relaxed, and you'll not even care if you went &pound;300 over budget. After all, what's &pound;300 extra over a lifetime of happiness with your partner, and a cherished album of awesome memories to look back on?

Wedding Photography Pricing

September is a time for a second summer, with warm, golden lighting, and vibrant foliage with a tint of Autumnal colours. It's my favourite month of the year for weddings, and this September I had the pleasure of photographing Amy &amp; Keith's wedding at Broxmouth Courtyard, a beautiful rustic venue nestled amidst the lush East Lothian landscape. The wedding was a delightful mix of romance, elegance, and a rustic charm that perfectly captured the spirit of autumn.

The recently renovated Broxmouth Courtyard ticks all the boxes for a cosy early Autumnal wedding, with on-site accommodation and a dedicated bridal getting ready room. It's an absolutely gorgeous Scottish wedding venue, with the redbrick workd encompassing the cobbled courtyard. The ceremony room is flanked by ceiling length ornate windows, allowing natural light to flood in. As I arrived, Karen from The Daisy Chain Pencaitland was busy setting the scene with her beautiful floral arrangements in the ceremony room. Her bouquets were gorgeous - bright &amp; vibrant. Inside the Bridal room, Amy was having her hair done by The Made Up Team. Her bridesmaids were gathered in their matching satin pyjamas as they sipped their mimosas. There was such an electric atmosphere, with everyone excited for exciting day ahead. Amy's dress was superbly matched with delicate jewellery and a floor-length veil.

Groom, Keith, was getting ready in one of the cottages on-site, with his best man, Aiden, and Dad and brother acting as groomsmen. They'd definitely made use of the beer on tap machine next to the pool table, and there was a bottle of fine whisky to fill their hip flasks with. Keith, skilled in the craft of tying a tie, helped the others get ready before we headed out to the courtyard for a few informal shots with the boys.

And with guests starting to arrive, it was now time for Amy to get into her dress. We headed to the balcony space above the ceremony room for these shots. Amy was glowing as her bridesmaids helped her with the finishing touches of her outfit, and she was finally ready for her first look with Dad. At last, it was time to be married.

A Humanist Ceremony

The ceremony itself was a beautiful summary of Amy &amp; Keith as a couple, how they met and even nodded to Keith's dark secret - he's a Swiftie. There were readings, including a funny poem, and a friend who played guitar during the wedding signing. They personalised their ceremony throughout, but especially so when it came to the Quaich Ceremony - arranging for a friend &amp; mixologist to whip up their favourite cocktail for the occasion. There was a big roar when they were announced as husband &amp; wife and exited their ceremony, hand in hand and grinning from cheek to cheek.

Confetti kicked off their drinks reception, with a long line forming from one end of the courtyard to the other. Amy &amp; Keith were totally prepared for their dip-kiss halfway along, with a flurry of confetti falling over them. And then it was on to cocktails - espresso martinis - and canapes as guests mingled, and family gathered to wish them congratulations.

A big party with lots going on makes for great candid wedding photography, and I weaved my way in and out of groups to focus on the banter and antics from Amy &amp; Keith's friends &amp; family. After a short time, we rifled through their family photographs and then hopped into a cool buggy that took us down to the small loch for some private couples portraits.

Newlywed couples portraits are some of the nicest moments of your wedding day, allowing some intimate time with your partner away from the guests. Taking a bottle of prosecco with them, Amy &amp; Keith enjoyed a few golden minutes to relax and be together as I took their pictures from afar, guiding them gently into poses that felt natural &amp; comfortable to them.

By the time we arrived back at the Courtyard, it was nearly time for the meal. Candles were being lit inside and the finishing touches to the place settings complete.

The dining area within Broxmouth Courtyard is brimming with rustic charm. With lots of natural light flowing in, it has an open air feel to it, despite being indoors. Amy &amp; Keith opted for speeches in between each course, beginning with Amy's dad and ending with the Best Man who did not let Keith away too lightly on the anecdotes front!

Night had fallen by the time the meal was over, and with the firepits lit and fairy lights in the surrounding trees, the courtyard was a cosy location to unwind before the dancing began. With low light, I had to get a little creative with my flash work so as to keep the outdoor atmosphere while still getting extra sharp and exposed images. Though the stars were shining clearly &amp; brightly overhead, there was still ambient light to create some backlit portraits of Amy &amp; Keith. The smoke from the nearby firepits added an extra - and unplanned - dimension to this set of images. The first dance was simply incredible. Begining with a few twirls, it quickly launched into an all out party welcoming everyone to the dancefloor as the band slammed out an iconically Irish song. Everyone brought their A-game to the dancefloor, throwing their limbs around - this party had well and truly started. Afterwards they switched to some Ceilidh dancing, with everyone enthusiastic for the Orcadian Strip the Willlow which was all kinds of chaos &amp; fun.

Real Scottish Wedding: Broxmouth Courtyard

It was on a bright and sunny day in December 2021 that I met Becca &amp; Grant. With countries and occasionally continents separating them, these few days in Scotland together were precious. Though American, both Becca &amp; Grant have close links to Scotland as well as fond memories of vacations around the Highlands. While already legally married, it was important to them that the ceremony &amp; celebrations take place in a country and city that they had so much love for and it was during a coffee that we first chatted about the possibilities for their day.From plans for their couples portraits, ideas for their evening reception and a potential pub crawl into the wee hours... I was excited for July already, but I had no idea quite how epic their day would eventually be...<h2 id="">The Royal College of Physicians</h2>Outside the Royal College of Physicians on the morning of their wedding day, there was no indication of the excitement and anticipation brewing inside. As I arrived, the girls were halfway ready - make up being applied, hair in rollers and glasses of fizz already in need of a top up. Beyoncé was playing and the girls were soaking in the atmosphere one beat at a time.Becca's beautiful veil was draped over a chair, the soft light from the window illuminating its fine floral detail.Her dress was a brilliant white, with off-shoulder lace. With earrings and an engagement ring that matched her United States Air Force Academy class ring, it was a touching theme that symbolised more than just a shared connection of career choices. It was how Becca &amp; Grant first met.As the ceremony approached, the emotion of it all began to hit Becca.The dream of a Scottish wedding was fast approaching, and Grant would soon be waiting for her at the altar. As Becca's mum dabbed the happy tears from her cheeks, it was nearly time for that dream to become a reality. This is one of my favourite parts of the day - the moment when a bride first sees herself in the mirror, that look from mom as she stems the tears back: the little girl that climbed Half Dome one summer vacation in Yosemite was now all grown up and about to marry the love of her life.I did have an ulterior motive for asking the bridesmaids to leave as Becca got ready and her mom fixed her veil. The massive double doors that separated the rooms was too good an opportunity to pass on - that opportunity being to set up an epic First Look with Becca's bridesmaids. Lining up the girls and warning them that the next person to open these doors was going to be Becca created all the anticipation. The look of awe on their faces as Becca walked through says it all - these are the moments that add so much emotion to a wedding gallery. While the main focus on morning prep was on Becca and her bridesmaids getting ready, we still had time set aside for some shots of Grant and his groomsmen. The very dapperly dressed men were getting quite a few looks from the locals, who were very keen to know where such fine looking gentlemen were from. Though we didn't have a lot of time before the ceremony was due to start, we managed to get several natural shots of the guys as they shared some nervous banter - it was clear to all that Grant was anxious to see his bride.<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:800px" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="fullwidth" data-rt-max-width="800px"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/652ef069db448cd89cf47de3_i-h4XKQXW-L.jpeg" alt="Untitled photo" id="" width="auto" height="auto" loading="auto"></div></figure>‍It was worth the wait. The bridesmaids walked hand in hand down the aisle with their groomsmen, teasing the moment when Grant would finally catch a glimpse of Becca. And sure enough, as Dad walked Becca down the aisle, Grant beamed from cheek to cheek. He did not stop smiling for the rest of the day. As Dad shook hands with Grant, the moment came for the couple to link arms and take their place for the ceremony. Flying in from Oklahoma to marry them, friend Father Steve was in awe of the architecture of St Mary's. With friends &amp; family flying in from as far a-field as Hawaii, California and New York, an entire wedding guest group shot... what an opportunity not to be missed. But with 70+ Americans standing on the steps outside St Mary's Church, OA and myself were initially disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm they had for making some noise for the video footage. "C'mon you guys, you are American! You can do better than that!" I shouted, and the roar of joy that came next echoed around Picardy Place. That's more like it! Raymond from Edinburgh Classic Wedding Cars was waiting patiently for us outside, ready to take us on our private city-centre tour for couple portraits. Into the beautiful Beauford we went, with the city waving at us as we drove by on our way to Princes Street Gardens and the famous Ross Fountain.‍<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:799px" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="fullwidth" data-rt-max-width="799px"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/652ef0b45afea97575bf683e_i-PqD63kj-L.jpeg" alt="Untitled photo" id="" width="auto" height="auto" loading="auto"></div></figure>As Grant scooped Becca up into his arms - there wasn't a pair of eyes in the park that were looking elsewhere. Edinburgh Castle high up on the cliffs behind them, it was kind of shot that made me yell a little "YES!" internally when I clicked the shutter. What I love about these images is that they are more than just photos of a couple with a pretty background. They really capture who Becca and Grant are. A quiet oasis from the busy city streets around us, we had the place to ourselves. Their friends &amp; family were already a few Proseccos in, and awaiting the happy couple. But Grant had a wee surprise for everyone for he had nipped upstairs for a quick costume change. Out with the uniform - Grant went native and returned looking very dashing in a kilt. Things got emotional for the after-dinner speeches. With references to the early days in the Academy, there was belly-aching laughter as well as touching words from their loved ones - best man Alan, bridesmaid Hillary, Grant's sister Roz and &nbsp;Becca's sister and maid of honour Devon. Hugs, cheers and love all round.Father and Daughter, Mother and Son took to the dance floor first - a cherished few minutes between parent and child that needed no words to convey the emotion of the moment. From first steps as infants, to the first shuffles underneath the grand ceiling of the Royal College of Physicians, I wonder if either parent ever thought that they'd be enjoying this eponymous moment so far from home.As Grant and Becca finally took each other's arms for their own first dance, little did their guests realise what was waiting outside. For no sooner as the first dance ended, than beating drums, bagpipes and be-kilted men marched in with an attitude and an accent that was going to make their evening truly an experience to tell the folks back home about. As a first introduction to Scotland's raw energy for music and dancing, Clanadonia is really diving in at the deep end! And they were absolutely fantastic.<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1024px" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="fullwidth" data-rt-max-width="1024px"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/652ef130999c1fdc291e7be3_i-qbw8bj6-XL.jpeg" alt="Untitled photo" id="" width="auto" height="auto" loading="auto"></div></figure>They got the entire room stamping their feet and swinging around with their partners on the floor. Though I'm sure their fierce and rugged attire was a bit of a shock to some of the guests, it was brilliant to see everyone get involved and up on the dancefloor getting into the spirit of Scotland and feeling the rhythm of the music through their bones.One of my favourite moments of the set was when the band got Father Steve to beat the drum for their final song of the night. &nbsp;Barely hiding his big grin, Father Steve was in his element. And then, the wild leader of the group - in his broad Scots accent - announced the name of the song, aptly named, "Ya Bastard!" Father Steve's cheeks went the colour of the walls! Classic moment and one I'm sure he'll never forget as well. As DJ Lee Live took over the music, the night's antics carried on with lots of smiles and laughter as memories were made. Watching several airmen dance to the Beegee's Stayin' Alive gave some serious Airplane! vibes. And it was fascinating to see that even those across the pond knew the moves from the Macarena. But the best moves of the night were during the Bridesmaids vs Groomsmen dance off. Limbs (and sisters!) were literally thrown around to the rhythm of the music - and there were a few standout performers. It was such a calm evening up there, with the soft hues of sunset casting a golden light on Becca &amp; Grant. "I'm so sorry, it's not my poncho," were the first words I spoke to Best Man Peter as he opened the door of Sycamore Cottage on the Arniston House Estate.
On the drive over from my home in Edinburgh, the rain had held off and had given me false hope that maybe the summer deluge that had plagued so many of my July weddings was over. How wrong I was.
The rain beat down heavily on my car as I arrived to the Groom's cottage. After getting partially soaked on my dash to get some ceremony pics before the guests arrived, I wasn't keen to repeat my mistakes. And that's when I saw it, my partner's poncho lying in the backseat. A garment I'd ridiculed for the best part of 5 years.

Whilst Scottish weddings maybe have a higher chance of rain than in other countries, Ann &amp; Jamie's wedding at Arniston House would prove to be one of the rainiest weddings I've ever attended. But with careful planning, quick decision making and a little bit of luck, the rain would prove to be the least memorable part of their wedding day.

<h2 id="">Groom Preparations</h2>
Arniston House is situated just south of Edinburgh, near Gorebridge, and is surrounded by countryside and fields. It's impressive driveway leads up to the main house, passing several cottages along the way. It was in one of these cottages that groom, Jamie, was getting ready in.
&nbsp;
The atmosphere in the groom's cottage was relaxed, with the boys joking and laughing over their bowtie tying skills, a certain plastic sgian dhu and the oathing stone that Ann &amp; Jamie had picked up on a recent holiday. With only a few short minutes together, we made the most of it and headed outside to the drive way for some relaxed photos together once the rain offered a brief reprieve. The plan was to meet later, before the ceremony, to get all the grooms people together for photos. At least, that was the plan...groomsman Steven apparently didn't get the memo (or more accurately, the bus.)

<h2 id="">Bridal Preparations</h2>
Ann was getting ready with her bridesmaids and mum on the other side of Arniston Estate in the Gardener's Cottage. &nbsp;The whole estate was lush, leafy green with beautiful trees lining the roads.
Inside the cottage itself was exciting atmosphere, with hair &amp; make up well underway and music playing as everyone gathered in the kitchen, chatting away as makeup brushes and palettes covered the table.
Ann's beautiful wedding dress was from Whistles, and she paired her gorgeous outfit with a stunning cape-veil and statement necklace &amp; earrings.
Each of Ann's bridesmaids helped her get ready. Lindsey was on dress duty, Katie the shoes and Kelly the cape, meaning each bridesmaid could cherish their contribution to helping Ann get ready. As a wedding photographer, these are some of the loveliest moments from bridal preparations and I would always recommend thinking about including this as part of any wedding day.
Another essential part of bridal prep has got to be a first look with a parent. This time we'd planned for two - one with dad, and one with mum. Remarkably, the rain stopped just in time for us to head out to the walled garden behind the cottage for some solo bridal photos and the first of the First Looks with Ann's dad. &nbsp;
It's so important on any wedding day to make time for these photographs. In the rush of getting ready, especially when you've got to travel to your ceremony, it's so easy to miss out on getting photographs of just you in your wedding dress.

<h2 id="">First Look</h2>
First Looks with me are always natural and the scenes, while staged, are always captured authentically. That means no repetition, no second chances. But it does mean setting them up correctly and talking through what's going to happen.
When Ann's dad, KY, arrived, I talked him through how we'd capture the first look - which involved placing a lot of trust in me, as he'd have to close his eyes as I held his hands and guided him through the gate, across the grass and into position. But it was all worth it for the look his face as he opened his eyes and saw his beautiful daughter as a bride for the very first time.
Complementing his joyful reaction, Ann's mum, Mindy, was overflowing with emotion and love when she turned around to see her daughter in their first look together. I'm not sure there was a dry eye between the three of us at the time. It was a truly special moment for the family, and one I'm sure no one will ever be able to forget.
On wedding days when your mum is often with you as you get ready - and maybe has already seen the dress - it can be so easy to dismiss needing a First Look with mum - but trust me, you'll not regret including these shots in your wedding photography. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

<h2 id="">The Ceremony</h2>
The wedding ceremony was to take place in the stunning Orangery, beautifully decorated by The Daisy Chain florist with a gorgeous floral arch and bright, colourful flowers lining the long aisle. Natural light spilled in through tall windows, allowing for a bright, airy ceremony feel while still being indoors. As I positioned myself at the top of the aisle, Kim &amp; Henny from the Arniston team prepared Ann &amp; her bridesmaids ahead of the ceremony.
With the nerves mounting for Jamie, I got a few laughs from the guests as I straightened his bowtie not once, but twice as he waited for the ceremony to begin.
The Orangery at Arniston has a beautifully long aisle, perfect for photography but maybe not so much for nervous bridesmaids in high heels. At last the moment came when Ann made her grand entrance, and when Jamie turned around they met each other with beaming smiles and laughter.

Ann &amp; Jamie's ceremony was beautifully conducted by celebrant Chris Lerpiniere, and began with a retelling the story of how they first met - and more importantly, to his utter embarrassment - how Jamie first introduced himself. "Loan, Jamie Loan. As in bank loan."
The happy couple were seated, facing their guests, as their story was told and Ann's dad and Jamie's mum gave readings. It was a really lovely way for them to feel a bigger part of their wedding ceremony, as so often couples stand and face each other or their celebrant for the whole duration and never get to see their families reactions.Ann &amp; Jamie also chose to have their celebrant bless a circle around them as they exchanged personal vows over their oathing stone. It was a beautiful way to commemorate their love for each other.
During the ceremony, the rain got heavier, dashing our hopes for outdoor confetti. Fortunately for Ann &amp; Jamie, Plan B was already in place so that we could do the confetti shot indoors within the Orangery.
It worked perfectly, and arguably even better as the Orangery has such a gorgeous interior.

The rain also prevented an outdoor whole guest group shot, so we had to get a little creative with the space we had and a wee step ladder.
As a wedding photographer, I know a whole guest group shot isn't the most fun experience for everyone, but I try to make it entertaining as I line people up and single out the ones trying to hide behind taller people. I like to do a nice formal one as well as a fun one where everyone can throw their arms in the air.
Once these shots were complete, the guests were directed across the lawn to the drinks reception taking place in the marquee.

<h2 id="">Drinks Reception</h2>
As guests gathered under the marquee for fizz and canapes and I was on candid photography mode, the sun broke through the clouds and the rain stopped. After hours and hours of constant, heavy rain, we rushed out to seize the moment and get the family group shots done.

We also did a little bit of time travel, as groomsman Steven had been so late to the wedding he nearly missed the ceremony and we couldn't get the full shot of Jamie and his groomsmen when we'd planned. So we pretended it was an hour ago and the groomsmen all lined up together for shots that would later be rearranged to earlier in their gallery.
With the rain still holding off, we made the most of our luck and continued straight into newlywed couples portraits, which is not typically something I do immediately after group shots on a wedding as I want my couples to also get to spend time with their guests &amp; enjoy their drinks reception.

To me, being a wedding photographer is about so much more than taking pictures - it's about ensuring your couple is having the best experience possible, and whilst I could photograph Ann &amp; Jamie for hours on end, I know they want to spend time with their friends &amp; family, to relax and sip some champagne and be present on their wedding day.
Whilst not everyone wants it to rain on their wedding day, as a Scottish photographer, I actually don't mind that much. Blue skies and sunshine are the enemy of any wedding photography, and the natural light after it's been raining can actually provide some of the best lighting opportunities.

Arniston House and its estate is such a wonderful place for newlywed couples portraits. There's such a variety to the landscape, with woodlands, rolling fields in the background, and of course the gorgeous Arniston House itself.
It's quite unique for an Edinburgh wedding venue as well, offering something distinct from the usual Castles and rustic barns.
For me, I want my couple's wedding photography to feel spontaneous and enjoyable, so that their experience feels unique to them. Capturing Ann &amp; Jamie's love for each other was an effortless task though, as it was just so easy to catch those romantic looks, the laughter and smiles. Newlywed portraits are not only a chance for gorgeous romantic portraits, but to spend a few quiet &amp; preciously private moments together in an otherwise busy day.

<h2 id="">The Speeches &amp; Evening Reception</h2>
The pre-dinner speeches were an emotional rollercoaster for Ann &amp; Jamie, with the couple each making a speech as well as both dads and the best man.
The atmosphere under the canopy was of raucous laughter, highly charged emotional moments and a little bit of heckling from a certain relative. But it was when KY stood up to deliver his speech that Ann could no longer hold back the tears. Her dad's speech was a beautiful tribute to his daughter, whose determination and ambition had brought her to Scotland from her home in Malaysia.

After the wedding meal, Ann changed into a gorgeous champagne coloured glitzy dress for the evening reception and kicked off the party with a spectacular first dance with husband Jamie.
Before they launched into their dance, Jamie told me that they were planning just a wee shuffle around the dancefloor, while bridesmaid Katie told me that they had been instructed to join in with the dancing about 30 seconds in.
Well, as their photographer, I've enough experience to know that couples who plan a wee shuffle often only do a first twirl around 30 seconds in, and I'd hate to miss that moment if someone stepped in front of it. So I told Katie to update the instructions - and leave it at least 45 seconds before they joined the happy couple on the dancefloor.

Well I'm so glad I did that because minutes later, I came to realise that Jamie was an absolute liar. A so-called wee shuffle turned out to be a full on choreographed number, &nbsp;with twists, twirls &amp; dips!
It was such a fantastic way to kick off the evening's dancing, with band Bass Rock Ceilidh providing modern rock twists on many of the ceilidh numbers.
These guys really know how to get everyone rocking it out on the dancefloor, and it was so fun to see the Malaysian side learning our traditional dances and throwing themselves into the mayhem that is a Scottish wedding.
During the meal, it had begun to rain again, even more heavily than before - washing out any chance of golden hour couples photography. But the dramatic weather was great for the candid photographs of the dancing, with the stormy clouds above a great contrast to the warm, cosy interior of the marquee.

I didn't want Ann &amp; Jamie to miss out on the evening couples shots though, especially with Ann's gorgeous new dress. So I set up my gear for some creative backlit shots outside once the rain cleared in the evening. The atmosphere was beyond perfect - the temperature reminiscent of late summer European nights just after a thunderstorm. In the distance, fog was rolling in across the fields. Night was setting in, but there was still a brightness in the sky. I always want to end a &nbsp;gallery on a great photograph of the couple, and these were definitely an amazing way to end their day's wedding photography.

One thing I noticed while editing their wedding gallery, was that how little the rain impacted their photographs. Considering how much the rain impacted the day's events - from indoor confetti and delays to certain shots in the morning at the cottage, to my desperate need for a poncho - the gallery barely featured the rain at all. Indeed, you might even think I've exaggerated the amount of rainfall that day!
Maybe that's testament to the beautiful wedding venue of Arniston House, or how stunning Ann &amp; Jamie are as a couple, or how fun the party was, or maybe it's that the best memories are made when you're surrounded by the people that you love.

Real Scottish Weddings - Arniston House

<h1 id="">A Fairytale Scottish Castle Wedding</h1>‍I'd met Calynn &amp;&nbsp;Johan a year earlier when they flew over from their home in South Africa to Scotland to view Drumtochty Castle. We snuck in an engagement session in Roslin Glen, near Edinburgh. It was clear from the second they stepped in front of the camera that they were naturals. I was super excited to see what they’d be like on their wedding day!‍<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0f126542a7a80b01b5cf7_calynn%26johannes_prewedding-73.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>‍Fast forward a year later, and Calynn &amp; Johan’s wedding day at Drumtochty Castle had finally arrived. On a day that promised rain, there wasn’t a single drop all day. As I drove along the lush driveway, the turrets of Drumtochty Castle peaked through the leaves.‍‍&nbsp;<h3 id="">Morning Prep &amp; Getting Ready Shots</h3>&nbsp;Inside the bridal suite, Calynn was getting her hair &amp; make up done alongside her bridesmaids. She raced towards me for a hug as I arrived, excited and glowing with happiness. The dress flowed down to the floor from its hanger –a stunning ivory satin fabric, matched perfectly with a tiara, and of course white trainers. Calynn eagerly showed me the ring she’d had secretly made for Johan. It was designed to match Calynn’s engagement ring, which was inspired by Lord of the Rings.&nbsp;<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ed27fbd92b48aea6897b_calynn%26johannes-21.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>‍Upstairs in the best man’s room the boys had gathered, with Johan calm &amp;collected. We cracked open the whisky for some cool shots, and then I was going to allow them a few more minutes before we headed out into the grounds for some more informal group photos. Before we did, I asked best man Frikkie for the rings – we both knew that one of them was a decoy ring, and that downstairs the real ring was waiting. But when Frikkie looked me in the eye with a slight panic, I knew something was up. Next moment, Johan is proudly telling me his secret plans – that he’d had a wedding band made for himself as a surprise to Calynn. <figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ed4613d8608d93fcef4f_calynn%26johannes-59.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>‍‍It took everything I had not to burst into laughter and keep a straight face, I asked Frikkie to step outside with me to talk briefly about the ceremony he'd be conducting so as not to arouse suspicion. When we were safely out of earshot, we immediately erupted into laughter.Calynn found the whole thing hilarious, but decided to go ahead with her surprise, and for us all to let Johan think that he’d be the one with the surprise. So we carried on as normal and until the ring exchange Johan was completely clueless.<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ed9a0fa3e276ed299b0b_calynn%26johannes-197.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure> Calynn looked stunning as she stepped into her dress and became the bride. We did a quick first look with her dad and got some bridal party photos on the stairs before we parted ways. The bridal party would be heading around the back of the castle, while I stepped out the front door and into the ceremony.&nbsp;<h3 id="">Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in Scotland</h3>‍Weeks ago, Calynn had decided to go with an outdoor ceremony in front of the castle itself. &nbsp;<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0edb3f86c06c2aaf473d7_calynn%26johannes-313.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>‍Their ceremony was full of laughter, with the couple each taking the time to declare their love for one another, as well as anecdotes on how they met and their hopes for the future. &nbsp;And when it came to the ring exchange, Johan’s stunned look of confusion made the surprise all the better. &nbsp;<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0edccca3f080bff663d9f_calynn%26johannes-390.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>‍We finished the ceremony with a confetti exit and then a whole guest group shot in front of the castle before heading in for the cake cutting. Johan was far too excited to be cutting the cake with a sword, and actually licked the blade of chocolate – much to his new wife’s embarrassment.‍<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65573aaf0668545f7f8ae29f_calynn%26johannes-441.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>&nbsp;<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ee03951026661f59be97_calynn%26johannes-481.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>The drinks reception was held inside, with cupcakes and canapes. We raced through the group shots, before I took Calynn &amp; Johan out around the grounds for my favourite part of any wedding day: couples portraits.‍Drumtochty Castle is beautiful, but it’s nothing compared to its grounds. The terrace walkway, the woodland path, and the small loch with its jetty, bridge and tiny island – we loved every minute of their couples portraits. The happy couple opted for a sweetheart table, with two empty chairs either side of them. At the end of the speeches, they invited their guests to take a seat with them throughout the meal to chat with them. It was a lovely way of having the best of both worlds – an intimate meal with just your partner, as well as having the chance to speak with your friend &amp; family. ‍‍<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ee820d5a07093c18dad0_calynn%26johannes-769.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>&nbsp;<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65c0ee9a415b32d1fedbeb27_calynn%26johannes-817.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>‍After the meal, we took a photo of Calynn &amp; Johan with each of the tables. Rather than do this during the meal, we had planned beforehand to do this in one of the other reception rooms. The groomsmen and bridesmaids helped rally all the people at each table up and we rifled through them.‍‍<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65aa75d7254b985b7f9319d2_calynn%26johannes-876.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>&nbsp;<h3 id="">Choreographed First Dance</h3>&nbsp;Calynn &amp; Johan had worked with a dance teacher local to them to choreograph their first dance –another surprise for guests. They opted to have a practice in the ballroom before their official first dance, as this would be their first time dancing in their wedding attire.‍‍<figure id="" class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center" data-rt-type="image" data-rt-align="center"><div id=""><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/651c7cfee7b269ba1f9e1fa5/65573b46600f94f88cdeec95_calynn%26johannes-978.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto" alt="" id=""></div></figure>&nbsp;Their guests were truly stunned at their routine, which ended in a dip-kiss. And with that, the evening reception began with guests taking to the dancefloor. For some reason, ABBA was a massive hit that got everyone up and dancing.&nbsp;<h3 id="">Creative Wedding Photography</h3>&nbsp;We chose to end their wedding photography at Drumtochty Castle with some creative backlit shots. As a wedding photographer, it was a dream location with an absolutely beautiful couple. The atmosphere of the venue combined with the happiness and laughter throughout the day, made this Scottish-South African wedding truly special. ‍‍‍

On arrival, I'll set the scene with artistic details shots of your wedding dress, rings, bouquet and venue &amp; ceremony setup.Both partners' prep is covered if you're in the same location or nearby, with lots of fun, candid shots of you and your wedding party getting excited for the day ahead. After the ceremony, we can do an optional whole-guest group shot &amp; confetti, before heading into candid photos for your drinks reception. I always ensure you get to mingle with guests as much as possible, preferring an efficient &amp; organised approach to group shots. Your romantic newlywed portraits are relaxed &amp; personalised to you both. I recommend 2-3 short couples portraits sessions throughout the day, so you're not away from your party for too long. These usually take place in your afternoon drinks reception, after the meal for summer light or sunset, and again if you'd like artistic twilight portraits. Couples enjoy this approach as it's flexible, and allows them to maximise their time with friends &amp; family. Expect a day of laughter &amp; happiness, as I guide you through your day without it feeling rushed or overwhelming. When you've got a growing family with little ones racing around, it can be so hard to get family shots where everyone's looking at the camera - or even in focus. This family photography session is designed to capture your whole family as you play, run around, and have fun - just as you normally would.
