Favourite Edinburgh Wedding Venues

October 4th, 2023

Edinburgh offers one of the most unique locations to get married, with a diverse range of wedding venues that are perfect for couples looking for that authentic Scottish wedding experience. As an Edinburgh Wedding Photographer, these amazing venues are right in my backyard and I'm lucky enough to return to them year after year. Take a look through some of my favourite Edinburgh Wedding Venues below for some wedding planning inspiration.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh

If you're looking for one of the best outdoor wedding venues in Edinurgh, then the Royal Botanic Gardens is definitely going to be top of your list. Marrying underneath the majestic giant sequioa trees in the John Muir Grove will transport you to the rugged landscape of the North American West Coast - and provides an intimate space to marry surrounded by nature. You'll have the Caledonian Hall for larger weddings, where you can enjoy your drinks reception by the Alpine Gardens and have a wonderful evening reception inside. You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to wedding couple portraits - from the Chinese Pavillion, the gorgeous flowerbeds and foliage. It's particularly beautiful in Autumn, and around the Equinoix in September you'll experience a golden sunset down the western facing path.

Edinburgh Castle

When you think of Edinburgh, you'll inevitably picture Edinburgh Castle. It's an iconic venue to marry in - and certainly a venue that will impress all your friends & family. It's actually ideal for smaller weddings & elopements, though you can hire it out for larger weddings too. The Gatehouse is my favourite spot for ceremonies - though St Margaret's Chapel is a close second. The former has a private terrace attached to it with some of the best views of Edinburgh around. You'll see Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill and the Pentlands, as well as all the beautiful architecture of the Old Town. The wonderful thing about Edinburgh Castle as a wedding venue is that there's so many beautiful backdrops for your couples portraits. It's also hugely fun for couples arriving by classic car, as you'll be driven up the esplanade.

The Signet Library

Jaws will drop to the floor when you hire this luxury wedding venue for your own special day. It's simply stunning. Every time I photograph a wedding here, I get goosebumps. It's awesome, in every sense of the world. The downstairs library is frequently used for ceremonies & drinks receptions, while the upper library is used for wedding banquets and evening receptions. With the backdrop of bookcases and beautiful architecture, there's so much to love about the Signet Library. It oozes charm and the Englightenment aesthetic that Edinburgh is known for. Artistic couples shots on the staircase are a must, and the soft lighting throughout the venue creates a cosy yet dramatic atmosphere. You're also a stone's throw from the Royal Mile, and I usually take my couples along to Victoria Street & Terrace for wedding portraits, as well as Parliament Square and some of my favourite closes for that real Edinburgh vibe.

Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh

A hidden gem along Queen Street, The Royal College of Physicians is a stunning wedding venue. Whilst there's no onsite accommodation, you can use the beautiful Cullen Suite to get ready - with lots of natural light streaming in through its tall windows that overlook Queen Street Gardens. The Great Hall is superb, with its tall ceilings and skylight, and intricate finishings and fireplaces. It's ideal for larger receptions. The library is a gorgeous space for intimate wedding ceremonies and receptions. There's so many layers to this venue, and secret spots for beautiful photos. You'll also have access to Queen Street Gardens for photos, which is gorgeous during the summer months and full of greenery. It's a little haven away from the busy city streets as well.

Prestonfield House

If you're looking for more of a country estate aesthetic but don't want to go too far away from the city, Prestonfield House may be your ideal wedding venue in Edinburgh. Situated just beside Holyrood Park, this luxury wedding venue is the perfect hideaway location for couples wishing to marry in a stylish venue. It's grand driveway is usually occupied by a peacock or two (and even a cat called Raven), and the grounds are superb, especially in the summer for outdoor ceremonies. Marry underneath the grand oak trees with views of Arthur's Seat, and enjoy a drinks reception by the Garden Suite, or outside amongst the flowers. The Italian Room is suited for smaller wedding receptions, while for larger weddings you'll have access to the stables. There's so many opportunities for beautiful photos around the grounds.
